Pronunciation[edit]

The following is a glossary of poker terms used in the card game of poker.It supplements the glossary of card game terms.Besides the terms listed here, there are thousands of common and uncommon poker slang terms. This is not intended to be a formal dictionary; precise usage details and multiple closely related senses are omitted here in favor of concise treatment of the basics. Player on the Button or the croupier overseeing a live game of poker. Deck: Pack of cards used in a game: Deuce: Term for the '2' card: Draw: Complete a hand with a specific range of cards: Drawing Dead: Player cannot win hand, whatever cards are left to be dealt: Draw Poker: Form of poker where players improve 5-card hands by changing cards. A player who plays like a nit is said to play nitty, or passively and fearfully, always fearing that the opposition holds a better hand. Nit: A poker player who uses an extremely tight strategy, who plays very few hands, and who aims to only get involved in big pots with monster hands. At some point in your poker journey, you will hear the phrase “tight is right”.

Etymology 1[edit]

Poker Slang Lingo: P - Q. Paint: poker slang lingo for a picture card-Jack, King or Queen. Pair: refers to two cards that have the same rank with a Pair of Aces topping the list. Pass: refers to no betting or folding. Passive Play: player who is not likely to bet and raise. Pat: this hand is it, no further cards required.

From nit +‎ -y. The “foolish, inane” adjective sense is from nit(“fool, nitwit”), possibly under the influence of nutty(“crazy, mad”).^[1]

The origin of the noun sense (“dope fiend, druggie”) is unknown, but could refer to a person who is under the influence of drugs to the extent that he or she is careless about personal hygiene and unkempt. Compare the verb nit(“to be a nitty”).
